Managing the Image Repository

The fourth tab of the workbench is the Transferred Images tab. It is essentially the mi2b2 repository assigned to the specific project, housing the Studies that correspond to Completed requests. Its storage is limited to the project's configuration. When the cache is full, users will no longer be able to transfer in additional studies from PACS.

The layout involves a main panel which displays the Studies the user has successfully transferred from PACS (for this particular project). Above it, a bar informs the user of the total amount of storage available and how much of the storage has been utilized. On the right, the usual filter menu provides the tools the user needs to manipulate the displayed information. Finally, at the bottom of the interface, the user has the option to download selected Study material or apply other configured actions, like encryption.

It is important to note that a series can only be viewed after it has been downloaded to a local machine.

Main panel

The main panel includes ten columns.

  • The Accession Number.
  • The Institution name.
  • The Department (Radiology).
  • The MRN of the patient.
  • The date and time the study material was cached.
  • The date and time of the study.
  • The study modality.
  • The size of the files included in the study.
  • The name of the user that last downloaded the study material to a local machine.
  • The most recent date and time the material was downloaded.
The user can manipulate the information displayed in the main panel by using the widgets of the Filter menu on the right. In addition, users can refresh the table by asking the mi2b2 server to return the latest information on cached items (18). Lastly, users can delete cached items to reclaim storage space (19).

Cache overview

Each project is setup with its own repository, which is of limited storage space. Users can see the total amount of storage available and how much of the storage has been utilized. The repository overview bar shows the total and used storage space in the cache (20). When cached items are selected in the table as in the figure above, the sum of their file sizes will be displayed in dark red in the same visualization (21) instead of yellow.


In order to be viewed in the next tab (Image Viewer) selected studies can be downloaded to a local machine by the user by clicking on the Download Studies to My Computer button (22). The user has the option to encrypt the material by checking the Encrypt Downloaded Studies option. The 128-bit AES encryption that is used will not allow users to view any material outside of the mi2b2 workbench. For example, an encrypted study will not be able to be viewed by Osirix or parsed with XNAT.

When the Configure Download button is clicked a window pops up via which the user can set the Download location and choose whether to receive the data in an encrypted format (23). Please note that downloaded studies can only be viewed by using the mi2b2 Workbench. They will not be viewable by any other tool since only mi2b2 Workbench will decrypt the studies correctly.

By clicking OK the selected images start downloading to the specified target folder, and the user is directed to the final tab of the workbench, the Image Viewer.

Example workflow

The repository, as already mentioned previously, holds all the material the user has requested from PACS, for this particular project. The following workflow demonstrate the procedure of selecting some of the material in the repository and starting its migration to a local computer..

Once again the user can filter for the MRNs of interest by entering a list of MRNs in the MRN filter box.


The studies corresponding to the MRNs of interest can now be selected.


In order for the DICOM files to be downloaded to the user’s local storage space, the Download Options have to be configured by clicking on the Configure Download button and setting the target location in the drop-down menu


After clicking the Download Studies to My Computer button, the Image Viewer tab comes up, and the studies start downloading to the local target folder the user previously specified. The Image Viewer allows the user to know which studies are actively being downloaded and which are in queue
